Walking and sleep guide

Is Walking Before Bed Good for Sleep?

An easy walk may fit the evening; vigorous exercise close to bedtime can affect some people differently.

Plain answerAn easy walk before bed is not automatically bad for sleep. Research generally does not show that all evening exercise disrupts sleep, but vigorous activity ending close to bedtime can impair sleep for some people. Keep late walks easy at first and judge your own response.

Intensity changes the question

A calm ten-minute walk and a hard hill session are not the same exposure simply because both occur at night. Effort, duration, body temperature, emotional activation, and how close the session ends to bedtime all matter.

The review did not support a blanket claim that evening exercise harms sleep, but vigorous exercise ending within about an hour of bedtime could impair some sleep measures.

Test a late walk carefully

  1. Choose a familiar, well-lit, safe route.
  2. Keep the first sessions short and easy.
  3. Finish with time for the normal wind-down.
  4. Track whether falling asleep, awakenings, or morning alertness changes.
  5. Move earlier when the pattern says to.

Protect the rest of the routine

A walk cannot compensate for too little time reserved for sleep. NHLBI recommends quiet time before bed and avoiding intense exercise and bright artificial light during that hour. A late walk should not require a bright screen afterward.

Walk More! You can do it!

WalkTeaming is an Android walking league. On any day you reach 2,337 steps, that day can qualify as a score. Your best qualifying day of the week goes onto a five-walker team, and the app supplies both the team and a matched opponent.

You do not recruit teammates or share a schedule. Use the button to email the Google account on your Android phone. You will get a reply with the current access instructions.
